Signs Your Body is Releasing Trauma

Updated: Sep 23

When the body releases trauma, it often sends physical and emotional signals that healing is in process. At Elevated Healing Treatment Centers, we help individuals recognize these signs as part of their journey to recovery, offering guidance and support to navigate this transformative process.

Trauma isn’t just a mental or emotional experience; it lives in the body as well. When trauma occurs, the body may store it in the form of muscle tension, suppressed emotions, or chronic pain. Over time, unresolved trauma can manifest in various physical forms, consisting of  headaches, digestive issues, or fatigue. However, through therapeutic practices, the body can begin to release this stored trauma, leading to noticeable signs of healing.

Physical Sensations

One common sign of trauma release is a physical sensation of trembling or shaking. This is often the body’s way of discharging the stored energy that has been trapped since the traumatic event. Shaking can occur during or after therapy sessions, particularly after intense emotional processing, and is a normal and healthy part of the body’s natural recovery process.

Emotional Conditions

Tears or spontaneous crying are also signs that the body is releasing trauma. Emotions that have been suppressed or buried for years may surface during therapy, leading to an emotional release. Crying, even without a distinctive reason, can be a sign that the body is letting go of emotional pain that has been held inside for too long.

Physical Signs

Another physical sign is changes in breathing changes. Individuals may notice that their breathing deepens or becomes more relaxed as the body releases tension. Shallow breathing is often associated with stress and trauma, so a shift to fuller, more rhythmic breathing indicates that the body is moving toward a state of calm and balance.

Other signs include muscle relaxation, feeling lighter or more energized, or even experiencing a surge of warmth or tingling sensations. These physical changes suggest that the body is processing and releasing stored trauma, making way for healing.

At Elevated Healing Treatment Centers, our therapists are skilled in guiding clients through trauma release. Whether it’s through EMDR, CBT therapy, or somatic practices, we provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals to experience and understand these signs of healing. Releasing trauma from the body is a powerful step in the recovery process, leading to greater emotional freedom and physical well-being.
