ART - Accelerated Resolution Therapy
If you’ve suffered a trauma and are struggling with painful memories that debilitate your mental health, ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy) can bring relief. In a process similar to EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), your therapist uses eye movement to help you process traumatic memories and begin to heal.

How Does ART Work?
Traumatic memories are stored in the brain differently from regular memories. When you experience a trauma, your brain sometimes dissociates from the actual sensations you’re feeling, which helps to protect you in the moment.

But the memory of the event, which is often difficult to recall, can linger and cause psychic harms. PTSD patients experience painful flashbacks where they relive the traumatic event. This happens because the brain has still not fully processed the memory.
ART gives the brain a way to recall traumatic memories, process them, and replace them with positive images or emotions. Your therapist directs you in a series of rapid eye movements, which often involve following the therapist’s hand as they move it from side to side. The eye movements effectively distract your brain and enable you to recall traumatic memories and begin to deal with them.
As you work through the memory, your therapist will help you begin to introduce positive images. The process is directed by the client; you can visualize how you wish the situation would’ve gone, or anything that helps you replace the negative feelings associated with the memory with positive ones.
What Can ART Treat?
Like EMDR, ART is meant specifically to help patients process traumatic memories. That can make it effective for:
-
PTSD
-
Grief
-
Anxiety
-
Depression
-
Phobias
-
Panic attacks

If your mental health condition is not related to a specific memory, then other techniques will likely be more effective.
